Syrens Minder, or Eroded Memories, is a proposal for a site-specific sculptural installation developed in collaboration with Kurt Bennetsen, head of temporary activities at Stigsborg Havnefront, Ejner Sommer, construction engineer and teacher at AMU, and lastly the Nørresundby Lokalhistorisk Forening. The project is developed in relation to the urban development project taking place in Stigsborg, Nørresundby (Denmark) once known as Syren, or The Acid in English, the heavily polluted site of a former chemical plant. The project ties into the municipality’s plans to rebrand and revitalize the area through a series of events, artistic and cultural intervention, and temporary architecture, more specifically the planned story path spanning through the area, aiming to create a narrative thread through the historic sites and events of Stigsborg and its surroundings.
Placed along the story path recounting Stigsborg’s past, specifically eight story points, arranged according to a flexible diagram, the work is designed to operate as an abstract compass. Touch reactive concrete pillars let you dive into the lost soundscapes of the derelict area, as they frame the now bare horizon, and through the sculptures’ minimalistic appearance Syrens Minder has the potential to affect one’s environmental sensibility. Syrens Minder has been developed as a tool for placemaking, adding to a common civic identity, in the redevelopment process of Stigsborg, but positions itself equally as a counter-memorial making place for reflections on how we use our urban landscape.
We designed a multi-faceted experience, that incorporates perceptual qualities and theatricality
of minimalist sculpture, the holistic, bodily experience of a built environment while the touch-sensitive sculptural elements become the interface for its interactive soundscapes relating to the locations and stories addressed along the path, becoming a vague memorial of Stigsborg’s past.

Syrens Minder is the continuation of an earlier iteration of the project, based on the touch-sensing concrete we developed by embedding capacitive sensors into cement, to create a robust and weatherproof interface for an interactive outdoor sound installation.
